Maru scored himself a bloody good job way back in the rough country behind Ruatoria. This was his kind of country and he knew Barry Hayes had just slashed a new block out of the bush. At least six months worth of fencing. He didn’t answer the ad for the job in the paper because he was pretty sure that not too many people would want it. The power had been on the East Coast for years but was only just starting to find its way out into the remote blocks and people were already getting spoilt. Fencers and scrub cutters were getting fussy and nobody wanted to camp out any more preferring to flick a switch instead of lighting a fire to cook a feed. Maru bided his time waiting for Barry to approach him when he couldn’t find anyone else to do the job.
